The outsourced competency model calls for a high degree of process coordination and
collaboration to keep operations on track. Most electronics manufacturers realize they
need more effective trading partner collaboration tools than the fax, phone calls,
meetings and EDI they have today. When looking for a system to help coordinate this
complex manufacturing model, outsourcers often overlook Manufacturing Execution
Systems (MES). When companies outsource production, they usually get rid of the MES
designed to run the production operations too. If the system is highly flexible and
appropriately configured, with open integration and web-based access it can provide:
- demand signals out to the foundry, assembly, test, EMS or ODM partners;
- current status view at major checkpoints from partners back to the outsourcer
- key quality data to improve processes and yields; and
- accurate data for measuring supplier performance and product costs.
